A compound sentence has 2 finite verbs. The are joined by conjunctions . They are two different sentences which could make sense without the conjunctions :)
E.g She ran to the beach and collected the materials.
Here 'and' is a conjunction
She ran to the beach , she collected the materials are two different sentences which make sense.
therefore this type of sentences are called compound sentence.
Hope it helps :)

A sentence which contains two independent clauses with related ideas is referred to as a compound sentence.
One way to punctuate a compound sentence correctly is to join the two independent clauses with a semicolon and a coordinating conjunction such as when, if, and and so forth.
Fr example:
The birds leave their nests when the sun rises. Herein, 'when' act as a coordinating conjunction which joins two independent clauses.
