Aquifers: confined and unconfined aquifers.
Explanation:
- Permeable rock formations which store groundwater and transmit sufficient quantity of it into a pumping well is known as an aquifer.
- Aquifers are divided into two groups.
1. Unconfined aquifer
2. Confined aquifer
- Unconfined Aquifer :
The aquifers in which groundwater occurs under atmospheric pressure are called "unconfined aquifers". If a well is drilled in an unconfined aquifer, the water level in it will represent the water table.
- Confined Aquifer :
A confined aquifer is that in which aquiclude ( Impermeable zone ) lie above and below it. The aquiclude restrict the movement of groundwater and as a result in the confined aquifer, the groundwater mover under pressure. If a well is drilled here, the water will readily flow out of this well without a pump. Such wells are known as " artesian wells ".
