A constitution is a long term contract which is enforced by the power of the people. It is designed to not be easily changed by quickly shifting opinion or mob rule.

Here is an example I give regularly here on Quora.

A man and wife take a cruise. All the employees on the ship sign a contract stating they will abide by the code of conduct, rules, and regulations of the shipping lines to protect the rights and privacy of the passengers. The passengers sign a letter stating they will respect the rights and privacy of the other passengers, and listen to the ships crew as needed for the safety of the ship. Sounds normal, right?

Now the ship sinks, and the man and wife plus 100 men, passengers and crew mixed, end up on a desert island.
