The US Constitution unique and is probably the most unconventional that has ever existed so I will contrast other conventional government's with it.
A conventional Constitution has enumerated powers, rights and liberties that it gives to the citizens. If the Constitution doesn't state that a citizen can do something, then the government can treat that thing as an illegal act. The government has all rights that it claims to have at the writing of the Constitution and in the future because all power originates from that government.
An unconventional Constitution like the US Constitution is written to limit the power of government so that it operates with the consent of the people. It is the federal government that has enumerated powers rather than the people and all other powers, whether expressed or not, are reserved for the states and for the people. This unconventional Constitution says that the rights and liberties of the people are not given by the government but by “our creator”. They precede the existence of the government and the purpose of the government is to preserve those liberties and freedoms.
But the politicans under this unconventional Constitution have been acting pretty conventional for a long time — pretty much from before the ink dried.
