Biodegradable Waste
- Biodegradable waste are the waste materials that can be decomposed by natural means.
- Biodegradable waste materials are decomposed by microorganisms like bacteria and even fungi.
- This type of waste materials is not harmful to the environment.
- Examples of biodegradable waste materials includes human excreta, manure, sewage, etc.
Non - Biodegradable Waste
- Non - Biodegradable wastes are the waste materials that can be decomposed by natural means.
- Non - Biodegradable wastes are not decomposed by microorganisms or fungi.
- This type of waste material is harmful to the environment .
- Examples of non-biodegradable waste materials includes plastic, detergents, some chemical fertilizers, etc.

Difference between bio-degradable and non bio-degradable waste :
Bio-degradable waste :-
- It is waste which can be decomposed into simpler matter by the action of natural agents.
- This type of waste is degraded with the help of microorganisms such as bacteria or fungi
- This type of waste can be decomposed easily without any difficulty.
- We can get rid of this waste in a short period of time.
- After they are degraded, they can be used in the production of several useful substances such as natural fertilizer, manure, biogas, etc.
- Examples of such kind of wastes- Paper, Kitchen wastes including vegetable and fruit peels, tea leaves, etc.
Non-biodegradable waste :-
- This type of waste cannot be further broken down or decomposed into simpler matter by the action of natural agents like microorganisms.
- This type of waste cannot be degraded by microorganisms such as bateria or fungi. ( Reasons - Organisms like bacteria or fungi does not contain enzymes which have the capability to dissolve non biodegradable waste and hence, they're not decomposed by microorganisms. )
- It is very difficult and less-efficient to decompose non biodegradable waste.
- This type of waste takes a very large period of time for their decomposition.
- They cannot be used in making other products and their recycling is also not feasible.
- Examples of non biodegradable waste includes glass, chemicals, plastic, etc.
- Environment is defined as the combination of abiotic and biotic factors that surrounds a living organism.
- Any unwanted or unpleasant change that occurs in the environment which affects living organisms is referred as pollution.
- It is important to manage the waste that we generate because :-
- It keeps away several communicable diseases from us.
- Environment gets cleaned after the management of the waste.
- The managing waste also provides the area for further management of wastes which are produced thereafter.
