Explanation:
The major difference between Spark Ignition (SI) Engine and Compression Ignition (CI) Engine is the mode of ignition. In SI Engine, the air-fuel mixture is compressed ( The temperature built up will always be less than the self ignition temperature of the fuel) and then the mixture is ignited by means of a spark plug.

In SI engines petrol or gasoline is used as fuel, hence these engines are also called petrol engines. In CI engines diesel is used as fuel, hence they are also called diesel engines.
