A dispersive medium is a medium in which waves of different frequencies travel at different velocities. With electromagnetic radiation, this occurs because the index of refraction of the medium is frequency dependent.

The shape of a pulse gets distorted during propagation in a dispersive medium this is due to, a sound pulse is a combination of waves of different wavelength. As waves of different wavelength travel in a dispersive medium with different velocities, the shape of the pulse gets distorted.

Answer :

1)Dispersive medium :

=> A medium is said to dispersive if the speed of wave in that medium depends upon the frequency of the wave.

=> Waves of different frequencies travel with different speeds in a dispersive medium

2) Why is the shape of a pulse get distorted during propagation in dispersive medium?

A pulse consist of large number of waves of different frequencies which travel with different speeds in a dispersive medium.

Hence they spread out by different amounts. As a result ,the shape of the pulse get distorted while propagating in dispersive medium
