The doctrine of lapse was an annexation policy applied by the British East India Company in India until 1859 . According to this doctrine in any Indian princely state under the suzeranity of the British East India Company as a vassal state under the British subsidiary system it would have its princely status abolished if the ruler was either manifestly incompetent or died without a male heir.

The policy is most commonly associated with Lord Dalhousie, who was the Governor General of East India Company in India between 1848 and 1856.
