A famine is an acute shortage . It is a severe shortage of food ( as through crop failure ) resulting in violent hunger , starvation and death. For example Bihar (1943) and Maharashtra faced famine in (1970- 1973)

A famine is characterized by wide spread of deaths due to starvation and epidemics caused by forced use of contaminated water and decaying food and loss of body resistance due to weakening from starvation.
People of Bengal were affected most during famine of Bengal in 1943.
