Females that do not have puppies are called b-i-t-c-h. Females that have puppies are called dams when referring to the puppies. The proper term for a male is actually dog however that can get confusing when we refer to the entire species as dogs. A stud is a male who is used for breeding. A sire is the father of a litter. The proper term for the offspring is whelps but puppies is also fine.
