Challenge Nepal Barwon Health Foundation

Overview

Our Huma Charity Challenge trek introduces you to the villages and culture of the Sherpa people. We take time to explore the colourful markets of Namche Bazaar and the famous Thyangboche monastery – the spiritual heart of the Khumbu region. We follow established trails in the Sagamartha National Park to view many of the world's highest peaks including the summit of Everest that peers above the 8000m peaks of Lhotse and Nuptse. We also visit Khunde and Khumjung villages where Sir Edmund Hillary established the regions first hospital and school.

The Khunde Hospital services about 8,000 Sherpas and families living in the Solu Khumbu area of Nepal and the 20,000 or more trekkers in the Khumbu (Mount Everest) area. The Hospital staff comprised of two western volunteer doctors, three paid paramedics staff twelve months a year. It is the only medical facility that operates on a year-round basis in the Khumbu area. The Khunde Hospital is equipped to handle basic medical care including some minor operations such as caesarean section or appendicitis – all complicated cases are sent to Kathmandu.

Challenge Grade
To determine the grade of a particular adventure we consider a number of factors. These include the condition of the walking terrain, the altitude, number of pass crossings and the length of the trek.

The Classic Everest trek is graded as an introductory to moderate trek. The 7-day trek reaches an altitude of 3780 metres following well defined trails. In order to complete this trek you will need a good level of fitness. We advise that you undertake regular exercise – swimming, cycling, jogging, three or four times a week for at least three months prior to your departure. Hill walking with a daypack is also recommended.
