A fuel cell is an electrochemical cell that converts the potential energy from a fuel into electricity through an electrochemical reaction of hydrogen fuel with oxygen or another oxidizing agent.Oxygen gas is fed through the cathode, where it absorbs electrons to create oxygen ions. The oxygen ions then travel through the electrolyte to react with hydrogen gas at the anode. The reaction at the anode produces electricity and water as by-products.

                               Fuel cell

  • When the potential energy between the molecules of two chemicals on reaction with each other is converted into ions which are positive and negative.
  • Thereby creating a certain amount of voltage difference that is it is converted into electrical energy. Then the cell where it is happening is called a fuel cell.
  • By considering H_{2}-O_{2} fuel cell we have hydrogen molecules having a certain potential energy and oxygen molecules having certain energy and when these two react with each other the reaction forms water in form of vapour and the energy that was earlier stored within the molecules is converted into electrical signals.
