A functional group is defined as an atom or group of atoms in a molecule that gives the molecule its characteristic chemical and physical properties. For example the OH group is a functional group and the organic compounds containing the OH group are called alcohols. The compounds containing this group show similar chemical properties (provided they do not contain any other functional group). Other functional groups include the carboxyl group (-COOH group), the aldehydic group (-CHO group), the keto group (C=O group), halogen atom (X, where X = F, Cl, Br, I ) etc.
