A gene is a distinct sequence of nucleotides forming part of a chromosome, the order of which determines the order of monomers in a nucleic acid molecule which a cell (or virus) may synthesize.

 A chromosome consists of a single, very long DNA helix on which thousands of genes are encoded. The region of the chromosome at which a particular gene is located is called its locus.
