The word ‘GEOGRAPHY’ was coined by Eratosthenes. He was a Greek Scholar ( 276–194 B.C.). The geography is derived from Greek word, geo which means “earth” and graphy means “to explain.” Eratosthenes is also known as 'Founder of Geography'.

Geography in Hindi is known as ‘Bhugol’ in India. The word Bhugol is derived from Sanskrit word , ‘bhu’ means Earth and ‘gol’ means round.

Geography can be defined as the study of Earth’s landscapes, peoples, places and environments. In simple words it is the relationship between man and environment.
