Ernest Hemingway was a veteran of World War I. It is through authors like him (much like his contemporary, F. Scott Fitzgerald) that we get a literary description of the lost generation. World War I seemed to imprint on the returning veterans and their generation, a feeling of such hopelessness and loss, that they combated such feelings with a seemingly surface-level, overly-cavalier, and indifferent attitude. In probably no other book was this shown so clearly as in The Sun Also Rises, as its characters exhibit such behavior through all night drinking binges, hyper-sexuality, and most of all, the participation in the famously dangerous running of the bulls.
Unlike any other, Hemingway's prose itself seems to emit an air of indifference, as his sentences are terse and seemingly unemotional, even when discussing something of potential emotional significance.
