Just because the Tao is the innermost nature of everyone, a bad person (who is currently contrary to the Tao) has the potential to become a good person (who follows the Tao). And just because the Tao benefits all beings without harming anyone, a good person (who is a follower of the Tao) will guide the bad person to become good with love and respect.
In other words, both the teacher and the student have equal status. Thus they should have a mutual respectful and mutual beneficial relationship. By guiding the bad person to become good, the good person realizes his goodness (as her/his innermost nature), while letting the student realize her/his potential (as her/his innermost nature). So this is a win-win scenario, in which both get benefit without causing harm to anyone.
A smart person may understand that a teacher should be respected, but may not understand that a teacher should be respectful to students. And one may understand that a teacher should be respectful to students, but may not understand that a good person should respect and love a bad person. If one understand this very well and practice what he/she knows, he/she is a true follower of the Tao.
