A homologous series is a group of carbon containing compounds which can: be represented by a general formula (e.g. the alkanes – CnH2n+2) have similar chemical properties. show a gradual change in their physical properties as the number of carbon atoms in the molecules increases.

Characteristics of Homologous Series :

All the members of a homologous series can be represented by the same general formula.

Any two adjacent homologous differ by 1 carbon atom and 2 hydrogen atoms in their molecular formula.

The difference in the molecular masses of any two adjacent homologous is 14 units.

A homologous series is a series of carbon compounds that have different numbers of carbon atoms but contain the same functional group. For example, methane, ethane, propane, butane, etc. are all part of the alkane homologous series
