A homologous series is a series of compounds with the same functional group and similar chemical properties in which each succesive member differs by CH2.

Two characteristics are-

1. All the members of a homologous series can be represented by the same general formula.

2. The difference in the molecular masses of any two adjacent homologous series is 14 units.

The name and formula of next higher homologue of HCOOH is ethanoic acid, CH3COOH
