Hydroelectricity is the application of hydropower to generate electricity. It is the primary use of hydropower today. Hydroelectric power plants can include a reservoir (generally created by a dam) to exploit the energy of falling water, or can use the kinetic energy of water as in run-of-the-river hydroelectricity.
The principle of hydropower is that the potential energy of the water stored at great heights in the dam is converted in to kinetic energy by allowing the water to flow at high speed. Then the kinetic energy of flowing water used to generate electricity.
In hydroelectric power station, the flowing water is stopped in high altitude rivers by constructing dams and is stored in huge reservoir behind the dam. The water stored possessed very large amount of potential energy. Then the water is allowed to fall through pipes on the blades of big water called turbines. These turbines are connected to electric generators.
Advantages:
(1) It does not cause any pollution
(2) It is a cheap and renewable source of electricity which will never get exhausted
Disadvantages
(1) The construction of dam on rivers causes a variety of geological changes in the down stream areas of the river. It was variety of plants and animals and human settlements get submerge in the water reservoir formed by the dam. Therefore, many plants and trees are destroyed and animals get killed.
(2) The soil in the down stream becomes poor in quality.

Heyaa.......
A hydroelectric generating station is a plant that produces electricity by using water to propel the turbines, which, in turn, drive the generators.
These power stations generate about a quarter of all the electricity used in the world. With 59 hydropower stations and access to vast water reserves, Hydro-Québec uses water to generate almost all of its energy output—98% in 2008. In this way, the company helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Advantages of Hydroelectric power plant : -
❤️Operational cost is low, hence the cost of power generation per unit is low.
❤️More reliable.
❤️Starting and stopping of this plant takes short time as compared to other power plants
❤️No ash disposal problems like in steam power plants, also no nuclear waste problems like in nuclear power plants.
❤️Life expectancy is higher. Plant can last effectively for around 50 years.
❤️Higher efficiency over the range of loads .
❤️Can use both as base load and peak load plants.
❤️Requires less supervising staff.
❤️Can be use for flood control process.
❤️Does not requires any fuel for power generation process.
Disadvantages of Hydroelectric power plant: -
❤️Power development depends upon quantity of water. Hence high rainfall area with adequate availability of water is required.
❤️Located far away from load centers.Hence transmission losses are high.
❤️Time required for development of this project is very high
❤️Capital cost required is also high.
❤️This project requires so much space that it can adversely affect and destroys surrounding ecosystems and ecology of the area around.
Hope it helps ❤️❤️❤️
