Leaf :

  • Leaf is a flattered, green - coloured structure which arises from the node of the stem or its branches. Leaves are found in different shapes, sizes, thickness, and growth patterns.

  • The green colour of leaves is due to the presence of a substance called chlorophyll.

Parts of a leaf :

  • The leaf is attached to the branch with a slender stem or stalk called petiole.

  • Lamina is the main body of the leaf. In most of the cases, it is broad and green. However, the leaves of a cactus plant are as thin as spines.

  • The tip of the leaf is called leaf apex, while it's outline is called as leaf margin.

  • Midrib is a thick vein, which runs from the base of the leaf to its tip. A number of thin narrow veins arise from the base of the leaf as well as the Midrib.

Functions of leaf :

  • Leaves carry out the process of photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is the process in which plants use carbon dioxide from the air through Stomata and water from the soil in the presence of sunlight and chlorophyll to prepare food and release oxygen.

  • The exchange of gases takes place through the stomata present on the leaves.

Modification of leaves :

  • In some plants, like pea, the upper leaflets are modified into tendrils which coil around the neighbouring objects to give support to the plants.

  • In cactus, the leaves are modified into spines so as to reduce the loss of water from the leaves.
