Answer:

A legend refers to a story that is passed on from one generation to the other. There is no evidence to prove its accuracy, but due to the lesson/value it holds, it still passes on. This poem is called a legend because it is the story of Saint Peter and an old woman during the past. The old woman refused to give Saint Peter anything to eat because she was selfish. She tried to bake a cake three times, given the condition that it should be small. But at each try, she found it too big to give away. This resulted into her doom, by getting transformed into a woodpecker. This poem teaches us values such as charity, love and kindness.
