Because it has a definite volume but not definite shape.
It's different from solid because solid has both definite shape and volume but liquid hasn't.

a liquid is a sample of matter that takes the shape of the container in which it is kept.

the particles of liquid are bound to each other with forces weaker than those of solids and hence they are loosely packed. this makes liquids mobile and shapeless. a liquid processor definite volume but no definite shape that's why it takes the shape of the container in which it is kept. liquids are relatively more compressible than those of solids. the kinetic energy of the particles is more than that of solids thus liquids have a disorderly arrangement of particles of matter as compared to solids. as the particles move freely and have greater spaces between them the rate of diffusion in liquid is higher than that of solids. these are some of the factors which differentiate liquids from solids.
