What is a litmus paper and how does it changes colour

litmus paer is a natural indicator which is made from a plant lichen and is used to check the acidity or basicity of a substance . when it is dipped in acidic solution... its colour changes from blue to red..and when dipped in basic solution it turns from red to blue....and in a neutral solution it is of purple colour!!!!
