The pair of electron in valence shell which is not involved in bonding is called lone pair electron.

A double bond occurs when two atoms share two sets of electrons. Electrons are always shared in pairs. Each shared pair of electrons is called a covalent bond
So lets assume that there are six electrons in valence shell its making covalent bong by sharing four electrons then the 2 electrons which are not shared are lone pair electrons.

The electrons which do not taken part in bond formation for molecule but their presence affects molecule's shape, bond angle and bond length is called Lone Pair of Electrons.
