Diminishing marginal utility
Explanation:
- Diminishing marginal utility implies that as a consumer consumes more and more units of a commodity at succession, the marginal utility derived from consumption of each additional unit of commodity falls. However, this is based on the assumption that the consumer consumes standard units of the commodity and consumption of successive units takes place continuously (without any time lag). In addition, it is also assumed that all the units of the commodity are homogenous and identical in all respects (size, shape, colour, etc.).
- According to this law, if the units of the variable factor keeps on increasing keeping the level of the fixed factor constant, then initially the marginal product will rise but finally a point will be reached after which the marginal product of the variable factor will start falling. After this point the marginal product of any additional variable factor will be zero, and can even be negative.
