metaphor is when you compare 2 things not by using 'as' and 'like'
whereas simile is when you use 'as' and 'like' to compare things

example-
metaphor: Ram was a lion in the fight
simile: Ram fought like a lion in the fight

Alexander fought like a lion in the battlefield.- Smilie (look for"like")
It is  comparing two variables.

Alexander was a lion in the battlefield.- Metaphor
It is equating two variables.

If you do have exam tomorrow it would also be helpful for you to look into oxymoron and personification.

Happy learning;)
