Mirage is an optical illusion. Imagine walking in a hot desert, you see water on the ground. As you get closer the water disappears and you came to know that it was just an illusion known as mirage.

Mirage is formed when the ground is too hot. When cold air travels over this surface, it gets warmed. Light gets refracted as it moves from cold to warmer layer and produces a U shaped bend. Our brain thinks that this bent image is the real image coming from any other source and get illusion of water in desert.
