A mixture is a substance made by combining two or more different materials in such a way that no chemical reaction occurs. A mixture can usually be separated back into its original components. Some examples of mixtures are a tossed salad, salt water and a mixed bag of M&M's candy.

Mixtures can be broadly classified into two different categories, homogeneous mixtures and heterogeneous mixtures. Homogeneous mixtures are mixtures where the two components are indistinguishable from one another. They look like a single phase or medium. An example would be dissolving sodium choride in water. The mixture looks completely uniform and you cannot see the separate components. Heterogeneous mixtures are mixtures where the two components are distinguishable from one another.
