Smooth muscle is an involuntary non-striated muscle. It is divided into two subgroups; the single-unit (unitary) and multiunit smooth muscle. Within single-unit cells, the whole bundle or sheet contracts as a syncytium.

Non - striated muscles or unstriped muscles are muscles which do not show any cross striations. They are also called smooth muscles because they look smooth. They are involuntary in action. They are found in the walls of hollow organs like stomach, intestines, urinary bladder, uterus etc. The muscle fibres are long, spindle shaped with pointed ends and are uni - nucleated.
