Noun

The name of a person, place, animal, or object is a noun. For example, the name of a person is Riya, So, Riya is a noun. In the sentence: I went to Delhi, Delhi is a noun as it is a name of a place. Similarly in the sentence, He has an umbrella, umbrella is a noun.

Types of Nouns

Nouns are of generally 3 types:

  1. Proper Noun: It is the name of a person, place or animal. Example, Rahul is dancing. So the proper noun here is Rahul.
  2. Common Noun: When a noun is used in general for a group or for a general thing, it is a common noun. Example, The children are playing. Here, the word children is used for all children in general. So, it is a common noun.
  3. Abstract Noun: Something which we can't touch is an abstract noun. Example, I am happy today. Since we can't touch happiness, the word happy is an abstract noun.

Also, we have two other types namely: Collective noun and Material Noun.
