A nucleoid is an irregularly shaped region in a prokaryotic cell that contains most of the genetic material. It is not enclosed by a membrane. The nucleus is explicitly found in eukaryotic organisms while nucleoids are found only in prokaryotes. These structures essentially contain the genetic material and DNA is found in both the nucleus and nucleoid. The nucleoid is essential for controlling the activity of the cell and reproduction. It is where transcription and replication of DNA take place. The nucleoid is composed of about 60% DNA, 30% RNA, and 10% protein. The chromosome, composed of DNA, is the predominate molecule in the nucleoid. There is usually one haploid chromosome that is about 1 mm in length, with the typical prokaryotic genome size being on the order of 1.9–6.3 × 106 base pairs.
