Two lines in a plane which do not intersect or meet each other even when produced indefinitely in either direction, are known as parallel lines.

For example, the opposite edges of a ruler, railway lines etc.

Some properties of parallel lines are given below :--

  • The perpendicular distance between two parallel lines remains the same the same throughout.
  • Two line segments are parallel if the corresponding lines determined by them are parallel.
  • Two parallel lines can never intersect each other even if they are produced indefinitely in either direction.
  • Two lines are parallel if the alternate angles formed by their transversal are equal.
  • Two lines are parallel if the opposite angles formed by their transversal sum up to 180°.
