A periscope is an optical instrument to observe over or around an obstacle that prevents direct line-of-sight observation from an observer's position. It is commonly used in naval submarines to sight enemy ships and targets from below the water surface. It uses two totally reflecting prisms to direct light rays through a tube. Light from an object is turned by 90° down the periscope tube. At the bottom of the periscope tube, another prism turns the light through 90° into the viewer's eye.
