Phrasal verbs consist of a verb and another element, either a proposition or an adverb. Phrasal verbs often convey a different meaning front eh verb that they are formed from.

Example:-

  • I came across a lady who can foretell the future.

The phrasal verb came across has completely different meaning from its component parts. The phrase means finding someone, which is completely different from the meaning of the original words.

A phrasal verb may have the structure:-

verb + preposition  \: or \: verb + adverb

Types of phrasal verbs:-

  • Separable
  • Inseparable

1) Separable:- The verb and the particle can be separated.

Example:-

  • Turn off the T.v
  • Turn the T.v off

2) Inseparable:- The verb and the particle cannot be separated.

Example:-

  • Carry on with your assignment (✓)
  • Carry with your assignment on (×)

Idioms:-

An idiom is an expression of a group of words which has a different meaning from the meaning of the individual words.

Example:-

  • Sujata struggled with studies when she joined the new school; but she soon found her feet.

Here the expression found your feet means to become more comfortable with something after some initial difficulty.
