point charge is a way to characterize a charge without taking into account the geometry of the object containing the charge, instead what you do is consider that all the charge is concentrated at a point.  This greatly simplifies calculations but is not always valid depending on the distance and shape of the object.  It works best if the object is small or far away and less well in other circumstances.
