Elections are all about political competition, which takes various forms.

  1. It is a competition among various political parties.
  2. It also involves a competition among various ideologies of different parties.
  3. At the level of constituency, it takes the form of a competition among many conditions.
  4. Many times it becomes a competition among the top leaders of various parties. There is a kind of personality race.
  5. Elections also make the people aware of the national problems. Through the manifestoes of different political parties, people come to know about national problems and how to deal with them.

But this kind of competition can have some adverse effects. It creates "disunity" and divides localities and communities. Different political parties often level allegations against one another. Parties and candidates often use dirty tricks to win the elections. Illegal methods are used to win elections. As a result, good people who would like to serve the country keep away from the elections because they cannot indulge in malpractices. Our constitution makers were quite aware of these problems, yet they opted for free competition. They did so because this system works better in the long run.

Political leaders all over the world, like other professionals, are motivated by a desire to advance their political careers. They want to remain in power or get power and positions for themselves. They may wish to serve the people but it is risky to depend entirely on their sense of duty.

One way to deal with this real life situation is to try and improve the knowledge and character of the political leaders. The other and more realistic way is to set up a system where political leaders are rewarded for serving the people and punished for not doing so. It is the people who would decide that which politician should be rewarded or punished.

So, if a political party is motivated only by the desire to be in power, even then it will be forced to serve the people.
