A stage in society's development where more wealth is generated by the service sector than the manufacturing sector is called a post-industrial society.

Network society, post-Fordism and knowledge economy are some of the other terms used to describe a post-industrial society. In a  service-based economy, manufacturing happens elsewhere or what we commonly call as outsourced to industrial economies.

Even though this particular aspect makes the postindustrial society look as merely service-based, it still remains highly connected with the industrial economies to which the manufacturing is outsourced.
