Promote is a substance used in chemical reactions, it is just like a catalyst.

The workings of both are different.

A catalyst helps in increasing or decreasing the rate of chemical reaction.

While, a promotor helps in promoting the rate at this the catalyst works.

It promotes/speeds up the usage of catalyst.
