A protostar is a very young star that is still gathering mass from its parent molecular cloud. It is the second stage of a new born star in a nebula. It will soon reach a temperature of 2000 to 3000 K which is very hot and can glow red emitting energy. Protostars do shine . It is the energy source that heats up and causes it to shine.
