Answer:

Redox is a type of chemical reaction in which the oxidation states of atoms are changed. Redox reactions are characterized by the actual or formal transfer of electrons between chemical species, most often with one species undergoing oxidation while another species undergoes reduction.

Redox reaction:

• The reaction in which both ‘Oxidation’ and ‘Reaction’ take place simultaneously are known as Redox reaction.

Oxidation:

- Oxidation is loss of electron.

Reduction:

- Reduction is gain of electron.

A simple example of redox reaction:

\sf{C + O_{2} = CO_{2}}

We know that, In free state, oxidation number is equal to zero.

\sf{A + B + C = 0}

We can see that there is only one Carbon atom there and two Oxygen atom.

\sf{C + 2 \: (Oxygen) = 0}

\sf{C + 2 (-2) = 0}

\sf{C - 4 = 0}

{\sf{\boxed{C = 4}}}

\sf{C (0) =  +4}

\sf{O_{2} = -4}

We can see both the Oxidation and Reduction taking place. Hence, it is a redox reaction.
