hey,

reflex action

DEFINITION: It is a form of animal behaviour in which the stimulation of a sensory organ results in the activity of some other organ with out intervenation of will.

MECHANISM
If the reflex action is controlled by the spinal cord it is called spinal reflex and if it is controlled by brain it is known as cerebral reflex.
For a reflex action 5 things are normally essential
1)receptor
2)sensory nerve fibres
3)a part of central nervous system
4)motor nerve fibres
5) effector organ

sensory nerve fibres bring impulses from the receptory organ to the central nervous system. The motor nerve fibres relay the motor impulses from the central nervous system to the effector organs. Thus an impulse travels a path during reflex action which is called reflex arc.

EXAMPLES
-Closing of eyes when strong beam of light is flashed.
-Withdrawal of limbs when they touch hot objects.

IMPORTANCE
-It relieves the brain too much strain.
-It is an important activity for the survival of the animal.
-The responses of the reflex action immediately protect the animal from harmful situations.
