simply write, it alters the rate of reaction without actually talking part in reaction, here alter means increase or decrease according to the requirement

a catalyst is substance that do not take part in a chemical reaction itself , but it is used to increase or decrease the rate of a chemical reaction.
for eg- Iron is used as a catalyst in the Haber Process
