Answer:

Root is the part of a plant which attaches it to the ground or to a support, typically underground, conveying water and nourishment to the rest of the plant via numerous branches and fibres.

Functions of root are:

1) absorption of water and inorganic nutrients

2) anchoring of the plant body to the ground, and supporting it

3) storage of food and nutrients

4) trans locating water and minerals to the stem.

Types of Root:

There are two types of Roots-

(i) Fibrous Root - Fibrous Root is usually formed by thin, moderately branching roots growing from the stem. A fibrous root system is universal in monocotyledonous plants and ferns. The fibrous root systems look like a mat made out of roots when the tree has reached full maturity.

(ii) Tap Root - A taproot is a large, central, and dominant root from which other roots sprout laterally. Typically a taproot is somewhat straight and very thick, is tapering in shape, and grows directly downward.
