When acid is very strong and base is weak then after reaction the salt will be acidic, such as- NH4NO౩. Also when acid is weak acidic and base is strong then after reaction salt will be basic such as- Na2CO3. If both the acids and bases are weak/strong then the salt will be neutral.

Perhaps they gain the characteristic of their dominant parent: the acid or base. Whichever is stronger would decide the properties and character of the salt.

For example, NaOH + HCl = NaCl + H2O

Since both the acid and base are strong, the salt produced would be neutral.

Strong base + strong acid = neutral salt

Strong base + weak acid = basic salt

Weak base + strong acid = acidic salt

Weak base + weak acid = neutral
