In Hindu society, the term gotra is commonly considered to be equivalent to clan. It broadly refers to people who are descendants in an unbroken male line from a common male ancestor or patriline.

All men could join the Sangha. The children had to take the permission of their parents and slaves that of their masters. Women had to take their husband's permission. Men and women who joined the Sangha led simple lives.
