The standard 'Soap Solution' that is used to test for water hardness is made by dissolving soap flakes* (Lux is a good make in the UK, or purchased from the school/college chemical supplier) in aqueous ethanol. The water used for the solution must be distilled water. How much soap you use rather depends upon the hardness of the water you might be testing - a little trial & error needed.
