Soil is a mixture of organic matter, minerals, gases, liquids, and organisms that together support life. Earth's body of soil, called the pedosphere, has four important functions:

as a medium for plant growth

as a means of water storage, supply and purification

as a modifier of Earth's atmosphere

as a habitat for organisms.

TYPES OF SOIL

One type of soil is sand. Sand within soil is actually small particles of weathered rock.

Silt is another type of soil. Silt can be thought of as fine sand, and it will hold water better than sand.

Clay is very fine-grained soil. Its particles are even smaller than silt, so there is very little space between the fine grains for air or water to circulate.

Now, we can consider loam as our fourth type of soil, even though it is really a combination of sand, silt and clay.
