The use of a sound card is to convert the digital sound into analog sound so that it can be played through the speakers. These are sometimes used to offload the work from the CPU so that it can function quickly.

Sound cards are not needed these days separately for the computers as they come in the system already in the form an integrated audio processor on our motherboard.
