Subsidiary alliance system was started by Lord Wellesley to subjugate Indian powers without spending money on fighting wars.

it is a custom which was made by British government . in which the east India company gave its army men's protection to the king' s kingdom from any attract from another kingdom.
in return , that kingdom had to pay taxes to the east India company.
but in the case, when that under kingdom missed to pay its taxes on time, it' s kingdom
used to be taken under the government's service.
